RESEARCH METHODOLOGY FOR HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM (BA3003) Credits : 3 Master Program Trisakti Institute of Tourism Dr. Myrza Rahmanita, SE, M.Sc myrzarahmanita@stptrisakti.ac.id 081281234566 Dra. Rina Suprina, M.Hum, M.Si.Par rinasuprina@stptrisakti.ac.id 08179870973 Welcome to the course on Research Methodology for Hospitality and Tourism Within this semester, we will be exploring and discussing about Research Methodology for Hospitality and Tourism. Course Description The course emphasizes research concepts, in order to help students understand scientific research as an integrated process of thinking and an exciting enterprise. We want students to appreciate that science involves the continuous interplay of rationalism and empiricism, a combination that makes stringent demands on the nature of evidence and the research methods used. By the time you complete this course, it is expected that you will be able to: Recognize the characteristics of science and scientific research Demonstrate and understanding the research process Identify the research problems, theoretical/conceptual framework, research design, measurement Demonstrate and understanding of a wide range of techniques for sampling, data collection and data analysis Discriminate between different methods and their application Develop the research proposal and report writingThe assignments are designed to develop and demonstrate theseskills. During the course, we urge each of you to: Read the materials provided as well as surf the net for more resources Follow the schedule diligently Participate in the face-to-face meetings Participate in online discussion forum Do the given assignment and submit it at the given time Work collaboratively in group as well as work on individual basis Assignments Individual and team assignments will be given to class participants. Description In a good research requires a thought process that relies on the reasoning aspect. This reasoning can be used draw a conclusion in the form of knowledge. There are two reasoning that can be used in a scientific reasoning (Suharso, Puguh, 2009) That 1. Induction Is a reasoning process that draws the conclusion, the general nature of the facts / case individually. Inductive research is a type of research with the aim of developing a hypothesis teoti or through disclosure. Inductive research emphasizes the reality of the facts. 2. Deduction Is a process that is both individual deduce from the statement of a general nature. Brazilians deductive study aimed to test the hypothesis supporting a research types, through validation of the theory on the basis of testing the application of theory in certain circumstances. Proposition Is a trustworthy statement, denied or verifiable, the concepts or constructs that describe or predict phenomena. Proposition is a logical relationship between the two concepts. Hypothesis The hypothesis is a proposition that is formulated with a view to be tested empirically. Typically hypothesis states logically alleged relationship between two or more variables related propositions that can be tested empirically. Concept The concept is an abstraction of reality are arranged through the classification of phenomena that have similar characteristics. Construct Construct is a concept that has additional significance for the benefit ilmiah.Konstruk deliberately adopted a more abstract concepts, which have significance for scientific purposes

Description 1. Philosophy of Science Scientific research is very closely linked to the philosophy of science. Philosophy of science is a branch of philosophy that studies the foundations of philosophy, assumptions and implications of science, both in the natural sciences and social sciences. 2. Way of Thinking a. Thinking rationally, ie where the existing notion of obstruction of truth in one's mind. b. Think empirically ratinya penegtahuan can only be obtained based on empirical facts that exist 3. Development of Science and Research He is the science of rational knowledge and proven that explain and predict natural phenomena, as well as the theoretical knowledge which gives an explanation or a framework regarding a natural phenomenon 4. The Scientific Method The scientific method is a process of thinking get the knowledge, either in the form of scientific and scholarly knowledge 5. Thinking Process (Reasoning) In a good research requires a thought process that relies on the reasoning aspect. This reasoning can be used draw a conclusion in the form of knowledge. 6. Scientific Research The research will enable an individual to solve a problem and acquiring knowledge in it so find a way out of the problems it faces.

Description After completion of the study identifies the variables that will be used, as well as explaining the relationship between variables that exist are based on theoretical Overview seblumnya that has been done, now time researchers made a hypothesis for research. This hypothesis is a temporary answer to the research questions that can be tested empirically by using appropriate statistical methods. The hypothesis is a proposition that is formulated with a view to be tested empirically. Parumusan hypothesis 1. The form of the statement that led to the research objectives. 2. Form ditumuskan statements with the intent to be tested empirically. 3. The form of the statement that was developed based on theories that are stronger than rival hypotheses. Hypothesis formulation forms 1. Non-Directional vs. Directional Hypotheses 2. Null vs Alternate Hypotheses 3. If-Then Hypotheses

Description Analysis of Variance is a statistical technique in handy for checking a difference between the mean of two or more populations. Analysis of Variance will henceforth abbreviated ANOVA. Although the so-called analysis of variance, ANOVA goal is not to compare diverse population but compare the average population. Called ANOVA analysis of variance, because in the process of sorting through diversity ANOVA according to the sources as possible. Besides, ANOVA in the calculation process compares two diverse population estimates. Basically ANOVA test is performed to determine whether the mean differences were found in the dependent variable of group-specific group. Data Analysis Data analysis in qualitative research done since before entering the field. The analysis conducted on the results of preliminary studies, or secondary data, which will be used to determine the focus of research.

Description 1. Population The main purpose of sampling is to obtain information about the population. Hence a researcher must be able to identify precisely the population in the study so that no error in data collection. 2. Sample Samples are a part of the population and includes a number of selected members of the population. By pulling the sample, it will facilitate the researchers to get a general idea or generalization of the population studied 3. Data Often we hear the term data in everyday life, but most people still do not know and understand the true meaning of the word data. The term data comes from the Latin datum which is the plural form means something given. Understanding Data is a set of facts obtained and then allocated into a data for processing or processed so that it becomes something that can be understood by others.

Schematically, various sampling techniques shown in the figure below: From the figure can be seen that, essentially sampling techniques can be grouped into two Probability Sampling and Sampling nonprobability. Probability sampling include: simple random, stratified random proportionate, disproportionate stratified random, and random areas. Description The number of members of the sample is often expressed with the sample size. The expected amount of 100% of samples representative of the population that does not happen generalization error is equal to the number of members of the population itself. So when the total population of 1000 and the results of the research will be applied to 1000 people are without any errors, then the number of samples taken is equal to the total population of 1000 people. The greater the number of samples approaching the population, then the chances of generalization error is getting smaller, and conversely the smaller the sample size away from the population, the greater the error generalization. How many members the most appropriate samples used in the study? The answer depends on the level of accuracy desired or error. The level of accuracy desired or belief often depends on the source of funds, time and energy available. The greater the error rate will be smaller number of samples required, and conversely, the smaller the error rate, the greater the number of members of sample required as a data source
